What can be said about 2012?  It was a year, if you listen to many in the media, filled with doom and gloom.

The economy, politics, union bashing, loss of jobs, lowest lake level in recent memory, anti-wind turbines, anti-nuclear, anti-this and anti-that ... and the list goes on.

It was however, a year that was also filled with positive things ... events and people that bring home what our life is like in this place we call Bruce County, Ontario and Canada.

  • Volunteer drivers like Gail Gingras of Kincardine, who has been driving for 18 years with the Cancer Society

  • The annual Multicultural festival held each year that celebrates the rich diversity of Bruce County

  • Bill O'Keefe from the O'Keefe Grange at Mount Hope near Burgoyne who is currently only a 'hand-full' of people in North America who works as reviving historical fruit such as "The Wismer" apple

  • Southampton Rotary Club that continually gives back to the community.  In 2012, the club gave $10,000 toward a new outdoor education classroom at G. C. Huston Public School in Southampton - a newly constructed 'dome' classroom that will be used throughout the school year and will give students the opportunity to study nature and its correlation to the academic curriculum.

While many adults may look at youth today and wonder what will become of them and the world as they take their turn at the helm, youth today offer a positive outlook for the future.

  • There is 10-year-old Ziibi Cameron of Saugeen First Nation and G. C. Huston Public School who won the second annual imagaineNATIVE 2012 Youth Video Contest, as selected by almost a quarter of 600 public votes of 24 videos

  • The historic replica train station in Port Elgin that was designed and constructed entirely by local high school students at Saugeen District Secondary School

  • There was a group of six youth and nine adults from the Kincardine area who headed to Haiti on a mission trip in May to help provide a new home for a family, operating under the "Welcome Home Haiti" program and Haitian Christian Ministries

  • Eight local Special Olympic athletes who trained all year and attended the 2012 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Alberta

  • The transformation of many G. C. Huston Public School students that was amazing, as a result of the first full-length musical that they produced and starred in

  • Girls, ages eight to 13, continued to learn about the art of math during the second GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math and Science) Camp held at the Whitney Crawford Community Centre in Tiverton

  • The Bluewater Outdoor Education Centre is being recognized for its value to local students as it celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2012-13

Then there was the local baby, Rilyn Alice Campbell, who started the year by arriving quickly, at 9 a.m. on January 4, 2012.

While youth are about the future, they are also learning to understand and appreciate the past and the history that has lead to today.  Each year, Remembrance Day seems to become more important with a new generation now has its own veterans, just as their grandparents did, but who now understands what they fought for.  Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Constable Lincoln Dinning out of Wingham told students at Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) about his oldest son, Matthew, who was a Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan in a vehicle bombing.  Many students cried.

There is no doubt that 2012 was a tough, chaotic year and who knows what 2013 will bring.  We are in a global mess, of that there is no doubt, and, perhaps, like that generation that grew up in the 'depression of the 30s", we need to learn some of their lessons ...
