Volunteers make a clean sweep

The Tall & the Short of it ....
Rick Smith rakes as Ally Kelly waits

Pioneer Park at the Southampton Harbour was a beehive of activity early Saturday morning, April 23rd, as Propeller Club and Marine Heritage Society (MHS) volunteers swarmed the park armed with rakes and leaf bags.

Every year, the volunteers make a spring clean sweep of the park and also maintain it throughout the summer, including all the weeding and planting of annuals.

The group of retirees not only looks after Pioneer Park but they also maintain Chantry Island Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters.

In addition, the MHS operates summer tourist boat trips to the Island from May to September.

Ally Kelly is caught in action with a bag almost as big as she is tall!

The 14 volunteers gathered over 250 lbs. of branches that were taken to the landfill and over 45 bags of leaves that went to the Boy Scout camp.
