Down the hill to the Southampton Boat Launch on the Saugeen River ...

Students, teachers and parents all take part ...

... and then it's back to the classroom

Students at G. C. Huston Public School in Southampton don't do all their learning in a classroom setting, especially when it comes to the environment.

Each year during the winter, students from Jr. Kindergarten through Grade 3, raise young salmon from the initial egg stage through to young hatchlings.

The program was started by the Lake Huron Fishing Club, with funding from Bruce Power, to teach students about the importance of environmental stewardship and the importance of conservation and to see how fish grow.  The program has since expanded to 27 schools throughout the region.  While some, like G. C. Huston, Northport and Saugeen Central, raise salmon, others such as Kincardine schools raised rainbow and brown trout.

On Friday, May 13th (2016), students, teachers and many parents trekked down to the Saugeen River to release the 100 young salmon hatchlings under the watchful eye of the Lake Huron Fishing Club.

Under the leadership of Principal Dan Russell and staff, the students have studied and taken part in many environmental studies  and excursions.  From creating a butterfly garden to 'out in the field' wild turkey calling to the hatchling release program, the students of G. C. Huston continue to learn about the environment through hands-on experiences.
