The Greenhouse

Each spring, Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) Greenhouse program holds its annual plant sale and, without the proceeds from it, the program would not exist.

There are 22 students at a time in the program and every student has a specific job and responsibility in addition to a network of three adult volunteers who donate time on a regular basis checking and monitoring plants and watering.

Teacher Keith Day

"The students spend almost all their time in the greenhouse with hands-on experience," adds Day.  "We have completed planters/hanging baskets for Southampton and Port Elgin as well as Bruce Power and it gives the students so much in the way of experience."

The program has also meant that many students have gone on to post-secondary education in areas such as environmental sciences studies and horticulture.

Jona Ebel, Chair of the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation, makes time to volunteer each Thursday

The greenhouse is self-sufficient with no government or Ministry of Education support.  "We totally depend on our plant sales that have now begun every Thursday and also on donations and help from local businesses," says Day.

"We are very fortunate in that we have sponsors, such as Canadian Tire and Carlsun Energy that support us with donations of things like recycled wood and, in the case of Canadian Tire, a 'hoop construction' to expand our greenhouse capability," says Day.
