On May 18th, Saugeen Shores Constable Ken Cook, took the grade 5 class at St. Joseph's Elementary School in Port Elgin through the D.A.R.E. graduation after the students completed the nine-week program.

The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, or D.A.R.E. (define, assess, respond & evaluate) as it is known to students, does not simply teach students about the dangers of drug abuse, it also teaches them life skills when it comes to making good choices and that saying "no" can be difficult under peer pressure.

The program is carried out in all Saugeen Shores elementary schools by local Police officers who undergo specialized training and it promotes the presence of police in the schools and teaches that there are consequences for action.

During the program, students take part in role-playing situations, watch videos and discuss the message and hold a question and answer period.

The students are also required to carry out interviews on their own and then write reports or essays and are encouraged to talk about what they have learned from the program

The students are also required to conduct interviews and write reports/essays.  At graduation time, each student receives a D.A.R.E. T-shirt and medal along with a certificate.each student receives a medallion, certificate and a D.A.R.E. T-shirt.

The D.A.R.E. program receives no government funding and relies on donations from organizations and members of the community such as the Probus Club, Chantry Island Cham-bettes, Sutton Realty, Faith Lutheran and Port Elgin Rotary.

There are still three schools that are in the process of completing the D.A.R.E. Program and once completed, they will have their graduation sometime in June.
