Crime Stoppers is a civilian community organization devised to acquire information that assists law enforcement agencies in the resolution of crime.
(L-R) Chair Betty Bender, Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson and Audrey Keip of Hanover
Crime Stoppers was on the receiving end recently when the town of Hanover presented a donation of $500.
"We appreciate this donation very much," said Crime Stoppers Chair Betty Bender. "Crime Stoppers is a volunteer driven organization that depends on fundraising events and donations like this."
Crime Stoppers work with police forces across Ontario and Canada to help in creating safe neighbourhoods. The organization however, is a registered charity that is made up of volunteers and it's a program that relies solely on fundraising and donations to provide funds that are then offered as cash rewards for information that help police in their work against crime.
The Crime Stoppers Program is made up of three essential elements - the community, the media, and law enforcement.
In 2015 tips to Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce resulted in the seizure of over $849,362 in drugs and stolen goods, 28 arrests, and 23 cases cleared. Since inception in 1987 the local program has amassed totals of over $51.7 Million in seized drugs and property resulting in over 1,500 arrests while solving 2,558 cases. During that time span $242,105 in cash rewards have been approved for payment to "Tipsters".
Bender, further explains that, "Crime Stoppers works, and it works
because of the combined efforts of concerned citizens throughout
Grey Bruce who want to make our schools and our communities safer
places to live. Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce is proud to be a part
of this community, proud to see the community's support of our
program grow each year, and proud to be part of the solution."
