Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) held the Royal Idol show produced by music teacher, Kerrie-Lynn Boys, on June 15 that featured eight students performing musical selections.

Each student chose a musical selection from a movie that they then performed in competition before a panel of three judges of teachers.

The talent was exceptional and, according to the judges, it was a very difficult choice to select the winners.

Winner Jenna Lorenz, has been extremely shy about performing but said that when she was doing her homework and heard the Sam Smith song, she knew she could do it.

Her range from the high falsetto type notes to the deep-throated tones suited the song and her voice well and she held the audience enthralled as she performed.

Lorenz is planning to continue her studies in British Columbia in the field of marine biology.

Last year's winner, Hailey Patrice, was chosen a close second with her performance from the movie 'Dreamgirls'.  The judges agreed and said that they were astonished by the power of her voice.

Third place winner, Dylan Thomas, sang and played guitar performing Ed Sheeran's 'I See Fire' from the movie The Hobbitt.

One of the most popular performers was Joel Fawthrop who performed a western number, "Beer for My Horses'.

The judges agreed that he commanded the stage and that he would have "rattled some interest in Nashville" with his rendition.

Utsab Roychowdhury

Performer Utsab Roychowdhury had the audience rolling with laughter and sing-a-long participation as he performed "I'm a Believer" and ended by biting into a large raw onion.
