In this survey there were an inordinate number of
multiple votes with a comment that indicated anger and/or frustration.
We counted only one vote whether No or Yes.
Multiple voting ....
hmmmm. You can express your opinion easily in the comments without
trying to influence the vote one way or another. Most people just

It is a dangerous crossing with much evidence of an accident waiting to
For sure ... very dangerous
The MOT is negligent
yes, they also need to look at the highway from the bridge in
Southampton to Tim Hortons to the south. This has been a problem for
over 20 years! Both are going to kill someone.
should be solved by the Rail Trail Com.through fund raising or user
fees. This problem should have been anticipated before it was opened and
dealt with at that time.
The gov't is always promoting healthy life styles and this is one of the
best walking and biking trails we have. Must someone be killed before
something is done? Lowering the speed limit until after HighBerry Farms
might be a start.
The Rail Trail Committee built the problem...let them solve it!
Yes, but not with a million dollar overpass which nobody will use!
MOT has total control over that piece of highway and no other person or
organization is allowed to make alterations or additions to that
The problem is not the rail trail it is the location of the entrance way
to the business. Move that entrance way several hundred metres south and
make people drive in a laneway to the parking lot.
All those politicians & MTO boo-boo-cats who have decided chidrens'
lives are not worth protecting - please have the guts to name
As a biker, I have almost been hit numerous times by people "passing" on
the unpaved shoulder. This is an incredibly dangerous crossing, and
makes the rail trail a dangerous biking path.
There needs to be a light at the crossing.
Very dangerous for all riders and walkers...
YES! This really is a "no brainer". What are they waiting for? Some one
to be killed? This section of highway 21 has been a problem spot for
several years and is getting worse.
Yes, there has got to be a safer way of crossing. Too many people drive
way too fast down 21.
It's a serious accident waiting to happen! It is regrettable that when
the 21 was recently resurfaced that the MOT did not take the opportunity
to provide a turn lane at that time.
Absolutely! Proactive is the word here...& our whole community seems to
want this safety issue resolved...together.
They will but not until someone gets hurt or worse
Put in a pedestrian tunnel.
Reduce the speed limit to 60kph and install temporary speed humps
similiar to those already installed in some SFN locations. People will
have to slow down.
They would make it worse! Just wait & see!
Somebody should do something before there is a fatality.
Something has to be done at that location before something terrible
happens. Constant passing on the right occurs at any hour of the
day.Perhaps larger signs indicating Rail trail crossing and police
presence monitoring would help.
The MTO must address and correct this crossing before someone is injured
Bike riders need to plan there rides so as not to be around high traffic
times. I personally have never had a problem. But then again I don't
cross on a Saturday of a long weekend at 4pm.
at least come up with some suggestions so that we can compromise on a
Why should the MTO be responsible for solving a problem they did not
Is this really a big enough problem to waste tax dollars on... just use
It would not be a problem where it not for the Hi Berry very successful
fruit and vegetable store. Have them provide the solution. Oh it's local
..... but why should there be a retail store on a highway,
It is up to the persons using the trail to be careful when crossing the
It is Saugeen Shores problem. They should solve it. The Ontario
Government didn't create the problem.
Put a large tunnel under the road before some one is killed
solve it before someone gets killed, especially cyclists crossing the
As a summer cyclist it is crazy trying to comfortably cross this
highway. The action at Hiberry Farms makes it worse. Maybe the two
danger areas could be combined and solved in one go!
I ride my bike on the rail trail at least weekly. The problem is not the
rail trail, the cause of the problem is the trafic to and from the
farmers market.Rail trail crossing does not appear to be a problem in
the Spring and late Summer when the market is closed. Some government
authority created a left turn lane into Tim Hortons in Southampton, can
they not do the same at the market.
Much of the issue stems from vehicles turning into Highberry Farms and
other vehicles illegally passing on the shoulder. I say yes because some
of the half-baked drivers out there, including locals, don't follow the
rules of the road. Perhaps a better solution would be for the Ministry,
the Town, Highberry Farms and the Rail Trail Association work together
to resolve the issue.
It would just take 4 cement barriers on each side of the hwy at the
cross walk to keep drivers from the driving on the gravel. If they were
there they wouldn't be able to go around cars turning into Hi Berry
Yes long over due time for action no studies needed
21 is a highway. The rail trail should look for other solutions. They
knew the road was there when they when they converted the path.
I have had a couple of close call of vehicles passing me on the right at
the crossing, as well as saw two people nearly hit crossing. It seems
the MOT will not do anything until there is a death related to the
The Ministry of Transportation is responsible for the highways and as
such it really needs to examine this stretch of highway before someone
YES THEY SHOULD. Why isn't driving on the shoulder of the road enforced?
Why does someone have to be hurt or killed before an obvious problem is
yes, but police need to focus/enforce the traffic laws and we drivers
need to smarten up. ownership for this problem rests with us all.
Start planning for a long overdue by-pass, which will not only solve the
rail trail crossing problem on highway 21, but many other nuisance
traffic concerns in Port Elgin and Southampton.
The community has tried to correct this problem since the Farm market
opened. Time to get on with correcting the problem before a death occurs
at this highly travelled point on the road. Numerous accidents and
impatience will be the unfortunate outcome until this is corrected.
it would be a safer crossing if Hi Berry sold there produce in a retail
The issue has been going on for years..deal with it.
Absolutely, it is only a mater of time before a major incident happens.
This is a pressing issue that needs to be addressed now!
It is a very dangerous and frightening area of the highway when Hi Berry
Farm is at its peak. There is going to be an accident and it will be
People need to just cross when it is safe. If they use some sense they
will be safe.
Hopefully this will happen before someone is killed on the crossing -
rather than after such a tragedy.
Maybe a user at that time light not one that is on a timer.
I don't believe there is a problem, when I was a boy I was taught to
look both ways before crossing the street, I believe the rule is being
followed at this crossing.
The current crossing has all the potentials for a serious accident.
Someone better take hold of this problem before there is a death.
Don't wait for a fatality before addressing the problem.
If the M.O.T. is responsible for this portion of the highway and people
are showing concern, I believe that it is their duty to take those
concerns seriously. They might even consider placing pylons (perhaps) on
the shoulders of the roads. This might deter drivers from passing on the
right without creating a hazard for someone who has to pull onto the
shoulder in an emergency.
Way overdue, cycling and road traffic increasing just a matter of time
before a serious accident .
Because they extract a vast amount of tax dollars and do very little to
enhance safety. The police are left holding responsibility without
funding assistance. It would be shameful/atrocious if the MOT neglected
the issue till the first fatal accident. And at that point I dont think
we will be calling it an accident!
How exactly does the survey define "the problem"? Currently it is a
subjective, personal opinion and so asking whether the MOT should
"solve" the "problem" is a terribly biased way to conduct any survey.
This spot is a deadly accident waiting to happen.
I am afraid to cross 21 with my bike
Albeit a great idea, the Rail Trail is the brain child of the town, even
tho the province is allowing us to use the old rail bed. A better idea
is to re-route the trail, keeping it west of the highway.
Not MTO's problem or the users of 21. The rail trail committee and it's
users should solve the problem. Any solution that causes traffic
disruption then becomes the problem of thousands of drivers.
The solution that is appropriate should come from MoT but the funds
involved would be the responsibility of the County. This is not the only
place the trail crosses a highway.
This is a problem that must be resolved before someone is killed or
badly injured. I myself have had difficulty trying to cross hwy 21 on
Someone needs to. It will not get any cheaper the longer they wait. I
feel everyone is waiting for a major accident to occur. We have a small
business beside the rail trail and hear near misses daily. I hope it can
get resolved before it comes to a body count. How come we can always
find the money to do something like this after people have died and not
before? It is inevitable.
Look both ways before you cross
I have written the Ministry several times suggesting the entire route
from Southampton to Port Elgin should be 60 km/hr.-there are about 20
entry/exits of driveways etc. in 5 km stretch. Slower speeds and signage
would be helpful.
build a walking bridge over top of 21
Hwy 21 from Southampton to Port should all be 60 kph not 80 and there
should be a traffic light at the Rail Trial. We need to encourage safe
Maybe we should get it done BEFORE somebody gets hurt.
An accident waiting to happen
This is a tragedy area just waiting to happen. I would love to bike from
Port to South on this trail but will not risk crossing here. Would also
like to see change at the entrance/exit area to Highberry farm
this crossing is dangerous for rail trail users and also for people
turning left into Highbury Farm.
What problem.. ?? the people are causing there own problem if there is
one.. Why should the MTO try to fix stupid.. Definitely no..
