Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker and Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson hand-delivered a letter today (Oct. 17th) to the Education Minister Mitzie Hunter regarding unprecedented school closures throughout Bruce and Grey Counties.

In the jointly written letter, the two MPPs accused the Minister of being "punitive and short-sighted ... and destabilizing communities" cross the region.

With the Liberal government's new shortened accommodation reviews (ARC), it gives the public little opportunity to rally and provide input to closure decisions.

The major stumbling block for school boards is trying to keep schools operational based on the government's funding formula which has been a bone of contention since its implementation.  Funds for school boards to distribute are based entirely on the number of students or colloquially 'the number of bums in the seats' in classrooms.

With anticipated 'growth' in populations through Grey and Bruce due to Bruce Power's extensive refurbishment plans and Chapman's Ice Cream expansion in Markdale, one of the keys for a community to attract business and/or employees is access to education.  According to Walker and Thompson, the government's school closures are in fact impeding business and restricting community growth in the region.
