Christmas Community Food Drive a success! Thank you!

Station 50 (Southampton) Firefighters Peter Eagleson, Paul Shular, Terry Chappell, Glenn Goodale, Julie Ferguson, John Campbell and Mike Lorenz were all geared up to collect money and food outside of Foodland in Southampton

From Foodland in Southampton to Independent and Walmart in Port Elgin, Saugeen Shores Firefighters from Station 50 (Southampton) and Station 60 (Port Elgin) faced periods of rain and hail while collecting donations of both money and food for the annual Christmas Community Food Drive on November 26, 2016.

“We have a whole pickup truck full already,” said Firefighter Scott McMeekin who was stationed outside Rowland’s Your Independent Grocer holding a cart full of more donations.

Stationed outside Walmart in Port Elgin were Station 60 Firefighters Jackson Weber, Bucky Rae, Mike Coffel and Garry Smith

Myles (4) of Port Elgin donated a can of chunky soup to the food drive and received a candy cane and activity book from the Saugeen Shores Firefighters

All of the food and money collected is donated to the local Salvation Army Food Bank for Christmas.  “I know this is a day away from your families, but I appreciate and I am sure Ed does too, your time volunteering today….we couldn’t do this without you,” organizer Lorne Currie said in a heartfelt speech after the firefighters and volunteers dropped off the donated items to the food bank.

Station 60 (Port Elgin) Firefighters Jenna Stewart, Robert Blue, Scott McMeekin, Keith Steinhart and organizer Lorne Currie were parked out front of Rowland’s Your Independent Grocer

The many firefighters then thanked Currie for organizing the food drive.

Although numbers won’t be in for a few days, Currie said, Ed Giles of the Salvation Army will weigh the food, count the money and compare those numbers to numbers years past to see how they have done.

“Today looks like to be a success,” he said.
