A renowned scientist, Vera Rubin, died leaving a legacy of achievement behind.

She had to struggle to be recognized as a first rate scientist.  The glass ceiling was in effect at top level universities.

An idea that she had at the time of her thesis became the hallmark of her career.  It took a long time for her ideas to be accepted.  She gained acceptance by doing good science with hard work.  She built her science step by step.

Wikipedia says:

"Vera Cooper Rubin (July 23, 1928 December 25, 2016) was an American astronomer who pioneered work on galaxy rotation rates and transformed modern physics and astronomy with her observations showing that galaxies and stars are immersed in the gravitational grip of vast clouds of dark matter...Her work helped usher in a Copernican-scale change in cosmic consciousness, namely the realization that what astronomers always saw and thought was the universe is just the visible tip of a lumbering iceberg of mystery."

She verified the existence of dark matter.
