The original motion, brought before Saugeen Shores Town Council to demonstrate its support for the Low and Intermediate Waste (L&IW) deep geologic repository (DGR) proposed for the Bruce Nuclear site, has been in a state of deferment for almost one year and, at Monday night's Council meeting, (Feb. 13), it was removed and replaced with a new Notice of Motion for February 27th.

This will mean another vote is to be taken for, or against, the Town of Saugeen Shores throwing its support behind Kincardine and the proposed DGR location at the Bruce Nuclear site in Tiverton.

Kincardine Council approved full support for the DGR on February 1st stating that "....this Council, and previous Councils, have been consistent and steadfast in supporting Ontario’s proposed Deep Geologic Repository for Low and Intermediate Radioactive Waste at the Kincardine site, dating back more than a decade and as reflected in a Host Community Agreement dated October 13, 2004".

The Federal Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna, has been in the process of studying further information that she requested from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) before making a decision on the contentious issue of whether or not to allow the siting of the DGR at the Tiverton location.

The new Notice of Motion to be brought forward at Saugeen Shores Town Council will also provide another opportunity for public input despite the lengthy, intensive and extensive hearings that were held before a Joint Review Panel in 2013/14, after which the JRP issued a final report recommendating that the DGR move forward in the name of "safety" at the Tiverton site.

Councilor Dave Myette said that the Notice of Motion will also allow the two Councilors who were absent at Monday night's meeting, Cheryl Grace and Mike Myatt, to cast a vote on the issue.
