Fire destroys barn in Grey Highlands

On February 19, 2017, at approximately 8:23 a.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a 2004 Pontiac Montana van for speeding northbound on Grey Rd. 14 near Hopeville in the Township of Southgate.  

The driver of the van had been drinking alcohol. After registering a "fail" on the roadside Approved Screening Device, he was arrested and transported to the Markdale OPP Detachment for further breath tests, which he failed.  

The 55 year-old driver of Cambridge, Ontario was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a blood/alcohol content level of over 80 mg. He was also issued a Part III Summons for speeding.  

He is scheduled to appear in court in Owen Sound on March 9, 2017.


On February 20, 2017 at approximately 4:21 p.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a structure fire on Sideroad 25, west of Grey Rd. 7, in the Municipality of Grey Highlands.

The OPP, together with Grey County Paramedic Services (EMS) and firefighters from the Grey Highlands, Meaford and the Blue Mountains Fire Department, responded.

The barn, which housed tools, farm implements and various vehicles, was destroyed. 

The cause of the fire was electrical in nature and not deemed suspicious.

There were no injuries reported.
