Jr. Fire Fighter Program beginning for 2017

Jr. Firefighting Class of 2015

Saugeen Shores Fire Department is now accepting recruit applications for the 2017 Junior Firefighter Program.

The program is open for youth ages 9-11, with only 40 spots available. The Junior Firefighter program is free and will run for six weeks, Wednesday April 26th - Wednesday May 31st, each Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm.

The Junior Firefighter program will teach students about home fire safety initiatives, first aid as well as include hands-on demonstrations of auto extraction and pumper truck operations.

 Each participant will receive a t-shirt and a certificate at the end of the program.

“This will be the 28th year of the Jr. Firefighter Program in Saugeen Shores. Each year the program fills up and is well received. We have a lot of fun with the kids and we’re confident they learn a lot from us” said Fire Chief, Phil Eagleson in a news release.

To apply to the program, please complete the application form found online (saugeenshores.ca). Applications can also be picked up at the Saugeen Shores Fire Department (612 Emma St. Port Elgin).

Completed applications can be drop off to the Fire Department during business hours or emailed to Candie Blackburn, blackburnc@saugeenshores.ca. The deadline for application is Friday April 14th.

The program is made possible by Saugeen Shores Fire Department and their dedicated volunteer firefighters.

Learning how to escape a smoke-filled building

On May 31st, 2017, Saugeen Shores Fire Department will host a Graduation/Presentation Ceremony where the students will be demonstrating some of the techniques they have learned during training sessions. All parents and/or guardians are urged to attend the Graduation/Presentation Ceremony and share in your child’s achievements.

Training will occur at Saugeen Shores Fire Station # 60 located at  612 Emma Street in Port Elgin.
