Just as the region's population is about to undergo substantial growth, health care is looking at changes to reduce a health care budget that grows smaller thanks to the provincial funding formula.

Hospitals in rural communities such as Southampton, Meaford and Markdalge are facing the possibility of losing day surgeries and having them consolidated in Owen Sound.

As the demographic of senior citizens continues to rise, more of those in that sector will become unable to drive and, therefore, day surgeries for those and others who cannot drive will become more difficult when tied in to distance to travel, particularly given the lack of public transportation in rural communities.

Grey Bruce Health Services (GBHS) will be hosting a public information session that will provide an update on the on-going expansion of the Southampton ER and Lab along with the surgery program's potential changes.
