Constable Ian Clarke presents D.A.R.E. to Port Elgin Rotarians

Saugeen Shores Police Constable Ian Clarke presented D.A.R.E. at the recent Port Elgin Rotary Club on Tuesday, April 4th (2017).

Clarke has been conducting the D.A.R.E. (Define, Assess, Respond & Evaluate) program in local elementary schools along with officers Chantel Primeau and Ken Cook.

The program, presented to Grade 5 students, teaches them how to deal with situations such as bullying and saying 'no' to drugs.  The overall mission of the program is "teaching students good decision-making skills to help them lead safe and healthy lives".

The vision of D.A.R.E. is to foster "a world in which students everywhere are empowered to respect others and choose to lead lives free from violence, substance abuse and other dangerous behaviors."

The officers undergo specialized training and the program promotes the presence of police in the schools and also teaches students that there are consequences for actions.

During the 10-week program, students take part in role-playing situations, watch videos and discuss the message and hold a question and answer period.

The students are also required to carry out interviews on their own and then write reports or essays and are encouraged to talk about what they have learned from the program

D.A.R.E. receives no government funding and relies on donations from organizations and members of the community such as the Probus Club, Chantry Island Cham-bettes, Faith Lutheran and Port Elgin Rotary.

"By reaching out to students when they are young," said Clark, "it lays a foundation for when they reach high school and all the peer pressure that is there and, hopefully, they will then be able to make the right choices."
