Dave Hall, Vice-President of Saugeen Shores Minor Ball Association (SSMBA) and his two sons, Ben and Sam were all smiles as Port Elgin Rotary Club presented them with a significant donation of $5,000.

The Rotarians made their donation at the annual Home and Recreation Show on Sunday (Apr.9/17) at Southampton's Coliseum.

"This money is going to make a huge difference," said Hall. "We are in the process of upgrades at Biener Park and what started out as a fairly small project has really escalated.  If it wasn't for community groups like this, we would have to seriously take stock."

Biener Park, that was gifted to the town by the Biener family, is in need of new dugouts that are turning out to be more expensive than expected.

"There has been a real boom in player numbers," added Hall.  "We are up to 333 registered players so far this year.  T-ball for instance was at 46 last year and this year we are up to 125.  It shows how the numbers of youngsters are up in town.

Home Show co-ordinator, Dan Murawsky, said that most of the proceeds from the show will go toward the donation.  "We get a lot of requests for funding and felt that this was a worthy cause.  While we like to spread funding around, we felt that support of the kids is really important so we earmarked this amount for them.  Once you get kids involved when they're young, they usually stay involved as they get older and it's important to keep them active."
