A greenhouse that is also a science project Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) greenhouse is a science project that has been in progress for almost 30 years. Teacher, Keith Day, also a physics teacher, helps students understand both physics and the science of biology hrough the cultivation of plants from seed. The greenhouse project, which receives no funding from the school board, relies solely on the sale of its plants to remain self-supporting. "Community support has been amazing," says Day. "Not only do we get support through local business partnerships, such as Canadian Tire, Bruce Power, Chippewa Golf Course and the Port Elgin Business Improvement Association (BIA), but we also get huge support from individuals who come out to our plant sales."

Plants of every description including desert cacti "We create planters for people who bring in their own pots," explains Day, "and also provide plantings for events such as the Saugeen First Nations Education Awards Night" While the greenhouse project encourages students to take part in the growing experience, several senior volunteers also help out so that the greenhouse is an intergenerational experience. The annual Spring Plant Sale takes place every Thursday during the month of May - May 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. For further information, call Keith Day at SDSS: (519) 832-2091, ext. 623 or visit: www.saugeengreenhouse.com |
