At the February 25 closing of the tendering process for the proposed sewer expansion project north of the Saugeen River in Saugeen Shores, six bids had been received for parts B and C of the project: each Project 1603-B: This part of the proposal includes:
Hot Mix Pavement, Granular Base, Sanitary Sewers, Storm Sewers of
various sizes, Watermain, Sanitary Services, Water Services and Earth
Excavation.
Project 1603-C This part of the proposal includes other tasks in different amounts and also includes Forcemains.
The tenders will be presented to Town Council on March 8th by head of Engineering, Dave Burnside, for a decision. Part A of the project was extended for one week. Each of the bidders also had to provide a 50 per cent Performance Bond and a 50 per cent Labour and Material Payment Bond. A final decision to go ahead with the contentious project has not yet been confirmed. The project has been an issue of concern for parties concerned. Several residents in the caption north area have been concerned that the introduction of sewers will result in increased residential development. Others, who have installed new septic systems, are concerned about the cost that each resident will have to absorb to hook-up to the proposed new system. |
The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) has however expressed concern over the quality of water in the Great Lakes and the affect that septic seepage and below-standard systems have on the environment. The MOE has, in fact, stated that it prefers sewers and waste treatment facilities wherever possible. The project is part of the Building Canada stimulus program that provides two-thirds funding for eligible projects that can be "substantially complete" before the set deadline of March 31, 2011. According to the government , there will be no extensions to the program despite a stringent timeframe. The municipality must now make a decision on whether or not to go ahead with the project Recent relevant articles:
