Plans to replace Alexandra Community School in Owen Sound are well under way. The 2008 Accommodation Review recommended that Alexandra, Bayview and Sydenham School be expanded to JK to Grade 8 facilities and that Strathcona Senior School be closed. The Committee also recommended the replacement of Alexandra Community School based on available funding from the Ministry of Education. The Board received approval to proceed with the replacement of Alexandra based on the Ministry funding, the proceeds of disposition from Strathcona and monies from Board reserves. The new school will be constructed on the existing site and the current school removed. The new 257-student school will be a single storey building that will fit into the current neighbourhood.

The new school will be constructed of modern materials and will contain green and energy efficiency initiatives. The new school will be completely accessible, have on site parking and student drop-off areas. Large classroom windows and environmental systems will make the classrooms an inviting place to support student learning. The school will have a general-purpose room/gym, library, music room, special education room and adequate classrooms to support full day kindergarten programs. The budget for the new 26,300 square foot building and site work is $5.2 million. Initial applications are with the City for review and the goal is to start construction in spring of 2010, with the opening scheduled for the fall of 2011. |
