There have only been 10 finalist coaches named for the 2013 NFL Youth Coach of the Year and Peter Buttenaar, Football Coach at Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) in Port Elgin, is second on the elite list after being nominated by former student, Zach Scotto.

Scotto, who has gone on to University and is pursuing a career in Kinesiology and Sports Coaching, is an alumni Saugeen District Secondary School football player who was coached by Buttenaar.

The 15-year-old award was initiated to recognize high school level coaches across Canada who dedicate themselves to the development of young players ... on and off the field.

The Award is not based on wins and losses but is a recognition by current and former players, volunteers, fans, parents, administrators, school principals and peer coaches who submit short essays on the positive impact that a coach has on young players.

Those who are nominators are asked to reflect on how a coach teaches respect, leadership and appreciation for the community and the game of football.

The program sponsored by BlackRock Canada has contributed more than $170,000 in equipment and facility upgrades over the past 14 years.

The winning coach will be selected by a panel of journalists from across Canada and the winner and runners-up will be announced on Thursday, November 14th (2013).

The winning coach's program will receive an NFL $5,000 donation in new football equipment and BlackRock Canada will create $5,000 in bursaries to help the young players in the winning coach's community who are in financial need in addition to $2,000 in equipment to the two runners-up.
