Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey, and the Women’s Centre Grey and Bruce Inc. present the first annual "Shine the Light on Woman Abuse" campaign in November to coincide with Woman Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month in the Province of Ontario.

Initiated in London by the London Abused Women's Centre, the campaign has now spread to 14 communities across the province. The goals of the campaign are:

  • To raise awareness of woman abuse by turning the counties of Bruce and Grey purple for the month of November
  • To stand in solidarity with abused women and support them in understanding that any shame and/or blame they may feel does not belong to them but to the perpetrators of their abuse
  • To raise the profile of the community agencies that can provide abused women with hope and help as they attempt to live their lives free from violence and abuse

We encourage you to go purple!

Why purple? It is a symbol of courage, survival and honour and has come to symbolize the fight to end woman abuse.

The agencies fighting violence against women are asking everyone to join them and decorate their business or home with purple lights, balloons, streamers or any other purple supplies and help raise awareness.

The entire month of November is awareness month; if a specific week is your focus, please reserve Nov. 15-22.

Another way to go purple and show your support is by purchasing a “Wrapped in Courage” purple scarf. The Wrapped in Courage Campaign is calling on all people in Ontario to wear a purple scarf Nov. 25 – International Day to Eliminate Violence against Women.

To date, more than 7,000 scarves have been purchased in Ontario. Take a community or personal action by organizing an event or simply wear a purple scarf and use your social media to send out a message of support for abused women and their children. All proceeds go directly to helping local women!

Scarves are available to purchase at the following stores: Nine Waves in Lucknow and Kincardine, Belle of the Boudoir in Port Elgin, Sisters on Huron in Southampton, MacDonald’s Plus Ladies Wear in Walkerton, TNA Clothing in Paisley, Temptations in Hanover and The Scrapbook Shop in Mildmay.

Purple lights are available at your local Home Hardware stores as part of their support to the campaign.
