On the Bruce Peninsula, the people of many small communities know the name of Mary Millar, recent recipient of the 2014 Woman of Distinction award.

As the Co-Commanding Officer at the Wiarton Salvation Army, Millar ensure that people in the area have their needs met through the Food Bank, the Thrift Store and other services.

She is continuously involved in fundraising and raising awareness for those who need help.

"The first time I met Mary," says Lori Rumsey who nominated Millar for the award, "I knew she was special.  She has been a wonderful role model,, encourager and has inspired me to look for opportunities to serve our community."

Millar was also instrumental in projects, such as 'Miracle Place' in Wiarton which provides affordable housing and the expansion of the current Wiarton Food Bank, and is involved with Cape Croker's Food Bank and wellness initiatives.

She has initiated several programs that support and educate some of the 'at-risk' groups in the region and recently offered an innovative program of weekly presentations and activities for young mothers.

Millar was presented with the 2014 Woman of Distinction Award at the International Women's Day luncheon held on March 8th, a fundraiser in support of the Women's House Service Bruce and Grey.
