Science Basic research creates a spinoff.

The giant Hadron Collider at CERN is more than a pretty circular tube.   There are spinoffs of long term basic research that help mankind in a real way.

CERN and laboratories in the United States and elsewhere have been smashing particles into each other for decades to find out the secrets of nature.

One thing they need in these accelerator tubes is a vacuum.  Air contaminates their sensitive experiments  so they have gotten very good at producing vacuums.  They've gotten so good that there is a spinoff in the solar panel industry.

Solar panels are far more efficient in a vacuum.  Check out the explanation from CERN and note that with snow on them they still maintained an 80 degree temperature internally.
