We are pleased to introduce our newest columnist, Katherine Martinko with 'Katherine's Favourites'.

Katherine will be featuring recipes that are not only tasty but suited for today's busy homemakers and families.

Born in Guelph, she was raised in Dorset, Ontario Katherine has a wide variety of interests and accomplishments.

Not only is she an accomplished violinist, but is a recent graduate from the University of Toronto with a BA in English and history.

"I've been cooking for as long as I can remember," says Katherine,  "both helping my mother when I was little and taking charge of meal prep as I got older.  Reading cookbooks is one of my greatest passions".

Katherine has always had a love of food and cooking, much as a result of having traveled throughout the world and has also always loved writing.  "In grade 10, I won first place in the Provincial public speaking competition hosted by the Legion for a speech that I wrote about 'salt'."

Her travels through Europe, southeast Asia, and South America have greatly influenced the way she cooks.  "I  did a year-long student exchange to Sardinia, Italy, sponsored by the Rotary Club, when I was 16 and also spent one year living and working in Brazil and studying Portuguese before starting university. It was during my travels that I came to appreciate international foods."

In the spring of 2010, Martinko moved to Port Elgin. Her husband works at Bruce Power and, the couple who has a youn two-year-old son, Alexander, are also expecting their second child in November.

"My family lived in Muskoka," she says, "and so moving back to an area where I can live on the lake again is wonderful."

"I love to write and I love to cook," says Martinko, "so to be able to write a column about food is a perfect fit for me and I look forward to it."
