Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has submitted the Environmental Impact Statement, Preliminary Safety Report and supporting documentation for its proposed Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) for low- and intermediate-level waste to the federal authorities.

Marie Wilson of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), media relations manager for the project, discussed this with both Kincardine and Huron-Kinloss councils in March. NWMO has been contracted by OPG to take the project through the regulatory approvals process.

The submission of about 12,500 pages of material demonstrates that the DGR can provide safe, long-term management of low- and intermediate-level waste, says Wilson.

These documents can be accessed at www.opg.com/dgr.

"This is one of many steps in the regulatory approvals process which must take place before a final decision is reached on the DGR," says Wilson

"Dialogue with the government, Aboriginal people and the public has been a key part of this process to date, and there will be additional opportunities, including a public comment period and public hearing, for this dialogue to continue throughout the remainder of the regulatory process."
