The Kincardine District Secondary School Kinetic Knights robotics team is unveiling this year's robot at an open house Feb. 17, 4:30 p.m., at 952 Huron Terrace in Kincardine.

Everyone is invited to come out and see what the new robot looks like and get some information about the program which is sponsored by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). The robot will be entered in a regional competition later this year.

The team's administration captain, Grade 12 student Janelle Taylor, says the robot has to do a variety of things in this year's challenge which is called “Logo-motion.”

“The robot has to hang three different types of innertubes – triangular, circular and square-shaped – in the formation of the FIRST logo,” she says. “You get different points when your robot is able to do it in different ways on this wall. Your robot should have some kind of arm or deployment to get the innertubes on the hook.”

The challenge also incorporates a miniature robot, says Janelle.

“Your robot should be able to deploy this mini-bot that at the beginning is part of your robot but at the end of the match, it actually becomes a separate component and it climbs up this metal pole, like a race. The team that gets its mini-bot to the top of the pole in the last 10 seconds, gets extra points.”

The Kinetic Knights are always looking for help with financing and mentorship. If you can offer assistance, contact the team through the website at www.team781.com or contact the school at 519-396-9151.
