It was farewell to Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School for the Class of 2010. Thirty-one Grade 8 graduates, their educators, parents, relatives and friends gathered at the Whitney Crawford Community Centre Monday night as the grads received their diplomas and awards, and then enjoyed a dance afterwards. Valedictorian Lauren Eby urged the graduates to hold close to all their memories of KTTPS, including band, choir, the Grade 6 trip to the Outdoor Education Centre, storytelling, speeches, science projects, and especially the awesome Grade 8 grad trip to Ottawa.
Valedictorian Lauren Eby "We had two Grade 8 teachers this year," she said. "It was wonderful to have Mrs. Garland back because most of us had her in Grade 5. And then when Mrs. Surridge came back, it was like the first day of school all over again." Lauren told the class to think about the future and continue to support each other. "We will always have fond memories of KTTPS because it was our public school," she said. "Don't be sad because it's over; smile because it happened."
Emily Van Veghel sings "A Change in Me" KTTPS is also saying goodbye to teacher Melinda Smegal and office manager Mary-Anne Walker. Smegal was born and raised in Michigan and graduated from Michigan State University. She began her career there, teaching Grades 6 and 7 math and science for four years before moving to Ontario. She was a supply teacher at St. Anthony's Separate School and various public schools in Kincardine and taught Grades 6 and 7 at Huron Heights for a year. She then worked at the Bruce Inn for five years before getting a job at KTTPS where she has taught for 21 years. Smegal has been a Grades 3-5 teacher, mainly, and has enjoyed it immensely. One highlight was in 1995 when the school performed "Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat." She has also enjoyed teaching the students how to play the handbells over the years, and raising thousands of dollars for the Heart and Stroke Foundation through Jump Rope for Heart.

![]() Retired teacher Linda Smith (L) welcomes Melinda Smegal to retirement She said she'll miss the staff and students come September, but will be available as a supply teacher, if needed. "I won't miss all the work," she added. Smegal plans to relax at the cottage over the summer and then she and her boyfriend, Robin Yule, plan to travel to Prince Edward Island in September. She also wants to spend time with her sons, Jonathan and Darren, and her eight-month-old grandson, Fynn. And she is performing in the Kincardine Theatre Guild production of "A Christmas Carol" this fall. Walker came to KTTPS 28 years ago and has performed a wide range of office managerial duties, including handing out many bandages for the little hurts that came her way. She will be missed by the staff, students and the community. Award winners at Grade 8 graduation are the following:
