Youth service officer ready to help students and employers this summer

Emily Grubb is the youth service officer with the Service Canada Centre for Youth in Kincardine and Walkerton this summer.

Her job is to promote the services that the youth centre can offer students and employers.

The centres are a federal government initiative, assisting youth employment across Canada. They provide employers with job-posting services, and youth with help in their job searchers. They also organize events and workshops throughout the communities they serve. There are more than 300 youth centres across Canada.

The Kincardine centre is located in the Kincardine Library and is open Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Walkerton centre is at 200 McNabb St.

The youth centre helps young people by providing:

  • access to job postings
  • assistance in writing résumés and cover letters
  • help with job interview techniques
  • creative job search techniques
  • workshops on job search skills and practice interviews
  • casual labour/odd Job opportunities
  • volunteer experience opportunities
  • information on health and safety in the workplace
  • information on wage rates, employment standards and labour laws
  • information on federal, provincial and territorial government programs and services

The centre helps employers by providing:

  • a job-posting service
  • access to enthusiastic young people to fill employment opportunities
  • flexible staffing options (i.e. casual labour, long- or short-term employment); to suit individual business requirements
  • posting service for volunteer opportunities
  • information on health and safety in the workplace
  • information on prevailing wage rates, employment standards, labour laws
  • labour market information
  • information on federal, provincial and territorial government programs and services
