ATTEMPTED FRAUD BY PHONE (KINCARDINE, ON.) – On June 17, 2010 at 9:01 am, the South Bruce OPP received a report of an attempted fraud by phone from an elderly male in Kinloss Township. The caller called him “Grandpa” when he answered the phone and asked for a $2,000 money transfer because he’d been involved in a car crash with a rented vehicle in Montreal. Fortunately, he checked with his family and discovered this was a false claim, before sending any money. The South Bruce OPP are warning the public to use caution before sending any money in response to a phone call, letter or internet request. “The fraudulent attempts to separate you from your hard earned money are becoming very creative. Be sure the request is genuine before you respond. It’s very difficult to recover your money or hold the fraudster accountable….think buyer beware.” For more information about fraud you can call the Canadian Anti Fraud Call Centre at 1 888 495 8501 or check online at www.phonebusters.com. As this is a war film, residents should expect to hear loud noises that will sound like gun fire and explosions. Police want residents to be aware of this film crew’s activity so that unnecessary 911 calls or calls to the OPP Provincial Communication Centre can be avoided. TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD CHARGED WITH DRINKING/DRIVING AND RACING (WIARTON, ON.) – Bruce Peninsula OPP has charged a 21-year-old Wiarton area man with both drinking and driving as well as racing. At 1:15 AM, Friday, Jun 18th the young man was seen squealing his vehicle tires on McNaughton St. in Wiarton. Police stopped the man and determined he had been drinking. A roadside test was completed which resulted in a “fail” reading. The Wiarton resident was arrested and transported to the Wiarton OPP detachment where he provided breath samples at just below twice the legal limit. Mark PORTER will appear in Owen Sound Court on July 29th to face the driving charges. TWO BUSINESS BREAK-INS REPORTED (WIARTON, ON.) – Two local businesses were reported entered overnight Wednesday in Wiarton. Both the Coal Shed Willie Restaurant on William Street and the Frosty Freeze on Berford Street were entered by forcing a door. A quantity of change was taken from one of the businesses.
