SDSS Walks with Wes

On Friday May 9th (2014), the students of Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) showed their support for those with mental illness by participating in the 'Walk with Wes'.

In September 2011, a 16 year-old Walkerton youth named Wes Cameron, took his own life. A public awareness walk was initiated by friends and family of Wes, raising money for on-line counseling to help other teenagers who are affected by mental illness.

SDSS’s Link Crew organized the school event, raising over $650 to go toward the 'Wes for Youth On-line' organization. Saugeen District was one of many schools throughout Grey- Bruce that participated in the walk.

On Friday morning, the students met to listen to Wes’ mother, Yolanda Cameron, tell the family's story. Just before leading the students out of the school, they were treated to popsicles, as well as smile cookies that the Hospitality class baked.

Cameron and other representatives then led the group of students around the track in support of the cause.
