The humble ways of being human

It has been said that death is the great equalizer.  We all have this commonality among us.  None of us can escape this world alive.  This is one of life’s great truths that keeps us humble.  No matter how much money we make or do not make, no matter how successful or unsuccessful, no matter how healthy or unhealthy we are in life, death comes to us all.

Another of life’s great truths is that life is relentless.  Life keeps going, in all of its beauty and frailty.  Death will occur in some form on this earth and life’s ongoing creativity continues to emerge.  Spring represents the will to live.  Plants spring forth from the earth.  Birds sing their song out our window.  The ice has melted on the lake.  Winter’s sleep has awakened in the breath of spring.

I went for a walk with a friend of mine once and we stopped along the banks of a stream noticing a flower growing in rocks.  Somehow, some way this flower found root and grew up through these rocks.  Life is relentless.

Sometimes it takes signs outside of ourselves to bring what is dying inside of us to life.  This time of year in Saugeen Shores seems to lift many of us into life’s continuity again.  Working in the yard.  Planting a garden.  Playing a round of golf.  Hitting the tennis ball.  Riding our bike.  Lingering longer on the sidewalk with someone.  Renewing connections with people again.  Getting ready for summer activities with our children and grandchildren.

We may not always be able to muster the impetus to get going again.  It can take a while.  The seasons help us in our gradual growth toward life again.  These are the humble ways of being human.  This is the precious gift of life
