A friend of mine is taking a course in Machine Learning from Standford University on-line.  He is learning about machine learning by using a machine to learn.

The definition of pure machine learning, however, is a bit more ridged.

It is the science of getting computers to act without being explicitly programmed.

We use it all the time without knowing it.

We've all come to be amazed by what computers can do.  Alan Turing devised a test to determine whether or not a human was talking to a machine or another human.  If he could not tell the difference, then he was dealing with Artificial Intelligence  or AI.

IBM demonstrated a milestone when their Watson Machine soundly defeated Jeopardy champions.  To me it passed the Turing test.

This has to be extended beyond Watson, Google Search,  Robot Cars and sensors, however.

Can machines group together and solve previously unsolved problems?

I think so.
