On Wednesday April 15, 2015, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. the Friends of Port Elgin Branch Library will be presenting the Library Live! Event: 'Spring into Gardening'.
Youth and adults are invited to join us at the library for this amazing learning workshop.
Two specialists, Keith Day and Lee Murray, will be sharing with us their best tips and practices in horticulture. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and interact with our speakers. More than gardening, horticulture is an art and a science that can bring true enjoyment and benefits into your everyday life.
Keith Day is the Horticulture teacher at Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS). He is in his twelfth growing season with the Saugeen Greenhouse Horticulture program where students learn to grow all types of plants.
The innovative Greenhouse program is self-funded through plant sales that are held at the high school Greenhouse every Thursday in May from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. They also custom design planters for residents on request and create hanging baskets for the main streets in Port Elgin and Southampton as well as Southampton's picturesque Summerhill Road.
Day and his students have developed the 'Young Growers Outreach Program' to introduce Grade 1 students to the wonders of plants. They are able to do this with the support of Mike and Eleanor Mowbray, owners of the local Canadian Tire store. The students also enjoy working on the gardens at the Southampton Care Center and hope to also connect with Kingsway Arms at Elgin Lodge in Port Elgin this season.
Lee Murray has a passion for art. She studied design in Toronto early in life and is a Horticultural Therapist, an Artist, a designer and qualified 'plantsman' with more than 30 years experience.
Lee combines plants, plant-related material, arts and music into a natural therapy, adapted to the needs of different individuals. Her skills have been mostly dedicated to improving quality of life for people of all-ages, developing job-skills training for troubled kids job skills training and to helping individuals facing mental health difficulties. Her biggest achievement was the project she managed using Stratford Festival Theater staging to design “raised plants beds” for therapy.
