Bluewater students bring home medals

Three Bluewater District School Board students have returned with medals from the Canada Wide Science Fair, which was held from May 14 to 16, 2015 in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

MacPhail Memorial Elementary School grade 8 student Kyle Teeter was awarded a Junior Gold Medal and various scholarship opportunities for his project, “Earthquakes: Improving Building Resiliency”, which included constructing an earthquake simulator and a seismograph to examine the effects of altering vibrational frequencies.

Grey Highlands Secondary School grade 11 student Katherine Teeter won a Senior Silver Medal, multiple scholarship opportunities and the Health Challenge Award for her project, “Extracorporeal Sonic Wave Therapy for Inoperable Tumours”, which investigated the development of an Extracorporeal Sonic Wave Therapy Device.

Bruce Peninsula District School grade 12 student Megan Thomson won a Senior Silver Medal and scholarship entry opportunities for her project, “Concentrating on Neonicotinoids”, which examined the effects of five concentrations of neonicotinoids on Drosophila and related results to pollinators.

The three students had advanced to comprise part of the 6-member Team Bluewater 2015 at the Canada Wide Science Fair following their gold winning projects at the 17th annual Bluewater Regional Science & Technology Fair held on April 1, 2015.

“We congratulate our students for their impressive accomplishments at both the national and regional levels of science fair. These awards exemplify the standard of excellence and exceptional inquiry based learning that occurs in Bluewater District School Board,” says Superintendent of Education Jean Stephenson.

The Canada Wide Science Fair showcased the top 469 science students from 101 regional science fairs held across Canada.
