Northport School Community Council is hosting a ‘Raising Awesome Kids’ speaker series this school year.

The series consists of four individual speakers sharing information on topics such as mental health awareness, enhancing self-esteem, dealing with bullies, homework battles, internet safety and personal stories of  overcoming obstacles to achieve goals.

Kendra Fisher

The first speaker is Kendra Fisher who will share her personal story of the challenges associated with mental health issues.

Fisher grew up in Kincardine and, with the support of family and the community, quickly achieved great success in a hockey career.

When faced with the opportunity to realize her dream of  goaltending for Team Canada, she was diagnosed with a Severe Anxiety Disorder, Severe Panic Attacks Depression and Agoraphobia.  As a result, she had to leave the National Program in order to seek help to lean how to deal with what had become a debilitating disease.

Now, Fisher shares her personal journey and has joined efforts to bring Mental Health issues to the forefront.  It is her hope that her story will offer both hope and promise to others who are dealing with Mental Illness.
