It's that time of year again when Rotary will host the annual Winterama fundraiser on February 20th.

Each year, the outdoor winter event is a day filled with activities that include skating, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and curling hosted by four Rotary Clubs throughout the area ... Southampton-Port Elgin (Saugeen Shores), Shallow Lake, Hepworth and Tara.

In Saugeen Shores, curling takes place at the Port Elgin Curling Club and the wind-up of the day is at the PLEX.  In Shallow Lake, there are activities at the Community Centre, Sawmill Trails and Sauble Ski Trail.

School students and youth are encouraged to participate as a percentage of the funds raised go directly back to the schools for their own causes.  In addition, all funds raised are used for youth activities in Bruce and Grey Counties.

Last year, 2015, just under $23,000 was distributed.  The School Breakfast Programs received 30 per cent, the Shareback Program received 40 per cent of School and Youth pledges for use in their group's charitable work for children and each project of each Rotary Cub received $3,500.

How does it work?  Individual participants and groups get pledges of support for their involvement in the activities.  In addition, there is cash and in-kind sponsorship from area businesses.  In 2015, there were over 40 sponsors and over 150 participants at three sites.  The participants hand in their pledge sheets and funds at one of the Winterama locations and then go out and take part in the events of the day.

There will be several school-related events taking place and on Winterama day everyone is treated to lunch at each venue followed by award presentations.

Pledge sheets should be accessed no later than February 9th ... contact Rotary.
