Heritage Plaque Awarded

The Saugeen Shores Municipal Heritage Committee (formerly LACAC) has once again presented a plaque in recognition of a local home's heritage.

The farm-style home is owned by Lynda and Bryan Bedborough and is located at 376 Clarendon St. in Southampton. The home has been researched on four separate occasions by volunteers of the Committee with no definite date being determined other than through an early tax assessment tax assessment.

Joyce Johnston, Chairperson of the Heritage Committee said that, "The plaque reads that the home was built in c.1900 however, we are almost certain it was well before that and it may have been Southampton's original farmhouse."

The Property Plaque Program was originally established to recognize and hopefully preserve historic homes in the area. Owners can apply to have a plaque placed on their home. It will indicate the date, or in some cases, approximate date, of construction along with the name and occupation of the original owner.

"The research is done entirely by volunteers," points out Johnston, "and, sometimes, such as in this case, it can take a year before any determination is made. Anyone who feels their home has historical heritage can apply by calling 832-2008 or by visiting the Saugeen Shores Municipal Website."

Joyce Johnston, Chair of the Municipal Heritage Committee, presented the group's List of Priorities for 2008 to the Town Council on January 14, 2008. (Read More)

Runyan Cottage Celebrates 100th Birthday

Marjorie Runyan and Jack Todd

People along Southampton's shore came together Tuesday night to celebrate a 100th birthday. It wasn't the birthday of a person but, instead, was a celebration by a family who wanted to remember the home generations have spent the past 62 summers.Family matriarch, Marjorie Runyan explains.

The Daisy', as the house is known, was built in 1907 by George and Eva Scheeler and later sold to a Professor Boehmer. When he died in 1944, the property was put up for sale and my mother-in-law happened to be strolling the old boardwalk when she spied the for-sale sign. The Runyans decided that they could afford the $4,000 price and purchased the home complete with all the wicker furniture that the Scheelers had originally brought."

With a wrap-around veranda and elegant white exterior, the house is reminiscent of an earlier time

While most people celebrate birthdays, in Southampton, they also celebrate and honour the birthdays of heritage buildings.

This past summer, the Runyan family held an open house for their cottage, 'The Daisy'. Built in 1907 by a Swiss couple, George and Eva Schlee, the Daisy has withstood the test of time and the storms that roll in off Lake Huron.

Today's owner and family matriarch, Marjorie Runyan, decided that, after 100 years, the cottage "deserved a fitting birthday" and, on Tuesday, people from along the shore in Southampton dropped in to celebrate.

"It was actually serendipitous that the family acquired the Daisy," explains Runyan. "In 1944, my mother-in-law, Ruth Van Pelt Runyan, was strolling along the boardwalk when she noticed a for-sale sign in front of a cottage. It opened immediately on to the sandy beach of Southampton and had a wonderful yard and veranda. The asking price was $4,000 ... a large sum given the year, but she and her husband, decided to take the leap and purchased the cottage." Now, 62 years later, the Runyan family is still spending summers in the Daisy. .

"I remember when everything in the cottage was dark," says Marjorie Runyan at 87 years of age. "It was a sign of the times. The furniture was dark wood, the floor linoleum and dark planks with a potbellied stove and the upstairs inhabited by bats! There was an old army cot, not running water and an old claw-footed bathtub, but we loved it all. We came every summer and lived life!

My husband, Richard, loved it here, as do I. Honestly, I can't imagine spending summers anywhere else," says Runyan. "My girls and now their families still come every year. The cottage brings back memories of summers when my girls were growing up and now it's creating memories for their children.."

A wrap-around veranda provides a cool breezeway on hot summer days while the interior and furnishings are reminiscent of days gone by. "The kitchen floor has a definite slant and the wicker furniture is original," points out Runyan, "and, you know, we wouldn't change a thing."

As she looks out over the water, Runyan's eyes grow misty and her voice reflective. "I remember a time when the beach was all natural with beautiful sand dunes, but all that has changed. Some politician, in his or her wisdom, decided to strip the beach of the dunes in the name of progress and now we have the eternal problem of blowing sand that fills every nook and cranny. I studied geology when I was at university and I can't understand why the beaches are being treated this way."

Today however, the Daisy retains her elegant exterior but inside she has had a few updates. The colours are brighter and, upstairs, the bats have all but disappeared. Chairs still line the veranda though where various family members and visitors can spend a warm summer's evening watching the sunsets that have added to the area's allure.

"It's hard to believe that next door, Jack Todd, is still my neighbour. We're the same age, almost, and we both remember the days when our children played together. I don't know where the time has gone ... it seems just like yesterday.
