The snow banks are very high now.  It's a chore to perch the blue box up on top of them and the people who pick them up have difficulty too.  The Town does a good job in very difficult conditions.

A Snow Bird visits the Snow Birds

I was reading when this egret dropped by for a "handout" but left after a few minutes when the miserly "snowbird" wouldn't shell out!

The ebb and flow of activities in the Saugeen area is interesting.  Just before Christmas the Event Planner was really active.  It never gets full because of the technology. It's now getting more active as the new year gains momentum.  For example, people are already asking the dates of the Annual Sisters Warehouse Sale, which is August 28, 29 and 30, 2009.  Very neat to be able to put that event on 8 months in advance, eh?

Fran Plante took this photo of the neighbourhood fox as it searched for food at her home on the North Shore. The fox has been seen a number of times in a two-block area along the lakeshore. It appears to be the same fox that readers of Saugeen Times saw in that excellent photo taken by Bob Cartwright last week. (John Weichel)

Ed:  See Jan 9 below for the Fox.

This is TWELFTH NIGHT, The day before Epiphany in the Church's calendar.  Which is the tradition day for taking down the Christmas Tree and decorations, and the end of the Carols!

The Day after Epiphany is DISTAFF DAY (January 7) which is the first day after Epiphany (January 6) when women were expected to return to their spinning wheels following the Christmas Holiday.  A DISTAFF is the staff used for holding the flax or wool in spinning. . (Hence the term "distaff" refers to women's work or the maternal side of the family.)

The photo was taken from Jim and Grace Currie’s front yard on Carlisle Street on January 16, 2009.
Saugeen Shores is known for beautiful sunsets, but the sunrise can be wonderful too! A good way to start the day.
I enjoy your on-line newspaper.
Grace Currie

Editors Note:  You are correct, the sunrise can be very beautiful.  Out on the lake looking landward at sunrise is special.  As a certain time of the year the sun rises up the Saugeen River and if you are lucky enough to be out early, it is inspiring.  Thanks for the photo.
