Fog Shrouded Chantry Island (Walberg)

When we were children, Chantry was an island of mystery and adventure.  We thought of it as Treasure Island.

Train Wreck Site 1954

Here's some pictures of the structure on the rail trail to commemorate the train wreck in 1954. I wonder how many people are aware of it and its location, just across the road from the beer store.

The grand man of Fairy Lake John Higgins has been telling us tall tales about the stained glass of the Southampton Anglican Church.  Yesterday, we cornered him in his son Armen's Cafe to get to the bottom of his claims.

After long years in the choir, he had told us that one of the images that his mind focused on, when he had heard a sermon once too often, had six toes!

He had claimed it was St. Cecelia, but we investigated that and she was wearing shoes

Later he changed it to David the King.  The Saugeen Times sent out an investigative reporter and sure enough John's musings on Sunday mornings were correct.  David had an unfair advantage in his footing overcoming Goliath.  You can see the illusive other toe clearly displayed.

Nancy White of the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre shows off the the new Wizardry Wonder t-shirts that have been designed especially for the new exhibit now on until October.

"We wanted people to be able to take a little something away with them after they've spent time marvelling at the exhibit," she explains. "We only acquired a limited number so, anyone wanting to purchase one, is encouraged to do so before our sizes are depleted."

Let's wish Barb Ribey Bruce County Museum Director a speedy return to full steam ahead after her recent illness.  Stay tuned to the Saugeen Times, Barb.  The new "Pattern Wizardry" exhibit sure looks like fun!  We will miss you at the opening

This shape is used in nature. The Bees use it and it is the best space covering tesselation that exists.  Bees know how to pack honey and so do farmers with chicken wire.  For more go to the Museum and read the Saugeen Times coverage of the new family fun adventure Magical Pattern Wizardry

Yellow Headed Blackbird

A rare occurrence at my bird feeder yesterday, a yellow headed Blackbird not usually in this area but a western bird.

Skate Park Construction Begins

The Skate Park seems to have attracted a lot of donors.  There is so much construction in the area.

All the work going on everywhere has brought in a lot of workers.  We noticed that one of them was garage sale shopping today to buy some plates and glasses since he is rooming in the area.

Have you noticed the great increase in traffic.  Wait until all the road work and construction catches up with us this summer... let's walk.  Isn't it time for a small bus to run from Southampton to Port Elgin and a schedule?  Sure would be better than bag tags in June, July and August

The Boat House in Southampton is always a beehive of activity.  Bob Trelford and Peter Haskey are building a Lighthouse!  It's for Bruce County Tourism and it will represent us in other places as it will be place in a Mall.

It's not tiny either and will be maybe 16 or 17 feet high.  I wonder if Port Elgin would like a duplicate for their Harbour.  That would be a nice touch.

Meanwhile others are working on a giant covering for the floor in the Chantry Island Tour Base Gift Shop.  It's a work of art with smaller replicas of different designs being prepared for sale.  Vicki Tomori and her sister Connie must have conjured this up.  ... more to follow

Donna Tettnar (L) and Christa Eggars take advantage of a warm-weather Monday to enjoy their favourite past-times, painting and sunning.

According to Tettnar who lives in Toronto, "My husband and I are perpetual vacationers here.  We come up every chance we get, even in winter."  Eggars, on the other hand lives in the area and is a well-known local artist and art teacher.
