What can I do in the face of enormous obstacles?

Keith Reynolds

(continued)

A few of us went to Hamilton last week to listen to a talk given by Matthew Fox.  He is a man who articulates a hopeful vision in fragile times.  One of his important contributions has been to the area of “Creation Spirituality.”  He, with many others, has been trying to ground us in the care and respect for the environment and the wider universe.

The timeliness of the talk connected for me with this weekend's observance of “Earth Hour.”  In some ways one hour is such a small gesture.  Virtually insignificant.  Does it really matter that much anyway?

What can I do in the face of such enormous obstacles?  The part of me that is tempted by indifference asks these questions.

And yet when I listen to the deeper chord beneath the surface, I am moved by the great possibility of what one hour might offer.  A chance to pause.  A moment to reflect.  A time when I can do something.

I remember Mother Teresa saying that small acts done with great love can change the world.  Who knows what one little act on a Saturday night might do for all of us?
