Take Back the Night' is a universal movement that takes place
worldwide every September 19th to focus on the continued violence
against women.
It's unknown where the idea originated, although some say it started in
1877 when women protested the fear and violence experienced in the
night-streets of London, England.
Others think it may have begun in 1976, when women who attended the
International Tribunal on Crimes Against Women, lit candles and walked
the night streets of Belgium to protest continuing violence against
women. It came to Canada after the Montreal massacres of young women
engineering students.

Whenever or whatever its origins, the universal impact has been
undeniable. Thousands of 'Take Back the Night' marches or rallies now

those numbers.
The Southampton event, sponsored by the Women's Centre Grey and Bruce,
will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19th at the flagpole on
High Street and will proceed to the United Church.
