100 Women who Care Grey Bruce

One hundred (100) Women Who Care continues to move forward in their charitable giving in spite of COVID-19 and has also continued to grow in membership numbers.

In June of this year, the local group had 51 members and in only a few short months is now at 65, well on its way to their goal of 100.

The group is made up of like-minded, caring women who are committed to supporting the community by making a meaningful difference to important causes in the area through  monetary donations directed by a group consensus vote for the charitable recipient, with no third party involvement.

Members agree to donate $100 each at four one-hour meetings a year therefore, with 100 members, it would translate to a $10,000 donation at each meeting or $40,000 a year. Women can also join as a group of up to four. So rather than one member attending and donating $100 four times a year, a group of two, three or four women can join as a unit and share in the commitment.

They embody the saying, “Individually we are one drop, together, we are an ocean”.

At the group’s November 7th zoom meeting, three charitable organizations were brought forward as possible recipients, with the selected organization to be announced following tabulation of the voting.

Last month’s recipient, the Women’s Centre Grey-Bruce received $5,700 which, according to its Executive Director Heather Sheldrick, will go toward the ‘Adopt-a-Room’ project.  “We are renovating and updating the counselling area, client bedrooms and community resource room and installing all new flooring throughout to make it more cohesive.  Also, due to COVID, we have to provide separate spaces for the women, both indoor and outside.”

Established in 1982, the centre helps women in domestic violence situations have a safe place to stay.  “We see approximately 100 women each year along with 60 children, answer 150 crisis calls and work with 400 families that are transitioning.”

There are eight bedrooms with 20 beds available. Thirteen beds are funded by the Ministry and the seven others by donations or sponsors.

There is also walk-in and crisis counselling available 24hours every day.

Sheldrick also said that an annual Spring celebration is held each year for the sponsors and donors but, given COVID-19, plans for Spring 2021 are still uncertain.
