The Lake House
51 Fenton Dr., Port Elgin
The Lake House is a testimony to the talents of many people: a gifted designer, master builder Steve Dennison, and the creative forces at Bruce County Custom Cabinets.
It’s new but rooted in the past. With a design adapted from plans drawn up long before the discovery of a shoreline lot in Port Elgin, it combines much loved elements from previous homes in Florida and Lake Muskoka, and is exactly what owners Allan and Jane had envisioned for themselves, family, and friends in their 2017 design brief: a simple structure with an understated but complex roof line, humanly scaled, incorporating both classic elements and modern technology.
By foregoing a second storey, and using the full width of the land, the house honours the horizon line beyond the vast expanse of water. Inside, black windows frame striking views along an open-concept space defined by pale ash floors, white walls, a coffered living room ceiling and a vaulted ceiling in the kitchen zone. Flanking the core of the house are two ensuite bedrooms, with a mudroom and laundry area conveniently located at the garage entrance. The mechanical heart of the home beats on the lower level, down a wide staircase lit by an over-sized window, where more space for sleeping, creating and lounging can also be found. Allan and Jane welcome you to the Lake House and hope you enjoy the view.
