Students from eight area schools are skating, skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, running and walking their way around the planet this February, as part of Rotary Winterama’s “Move On Out” challenge.
Students track their daily kilometres on a website kindly designed by Nuclear Promise X (NPX). As well as informing students how they are doing compared with others in their class, school and Winterama overall, the website adds everyone’s kilometres together, and simulates a virtual journey around the world.
As of February 13th, with 15 days left to go, the 782 Winterama movers have collectively travelled 14,980 kms, and find themselves travelling digitally through the mountains of Chile, in the mid-summer heat!
Rotary Winterama movers have already collected thousands of dollars in pledge money for their efforts, ALL of which goes back to their schools. Rotary Winterama would like to extend their gratitude to the individual and corporate sponsors, who have generously donated to cover the costs of Winterama and the many youth programs offered by the participating Rotary Clubs.
As well as the lessons in citizenship and “giving back” that students are learning, the top three pledge-earning students in Winterama win cash prizes for their efforts. Students also win bronze, silver or gold medals for their individual efforts in the kilometre challenge, and the top kilometre class in each school also wins a tote bucket chock full of play equipment for recess time.
Do you know a student participating in the “Move On Out” challenge? Consider sponsoring them for their efforts, as they work to help fund their school nutrition programs and special projects.
Winterama will be sponsoring public skates at The Plex on Saturday, February 25 at Noon and the Shallow Lake Community Centre on Sunday, February 26 at Noon.
