REMINDER: Test Your Smoke Alarm today (Sept.28) and be Saved by the Beep

Tomorrow, Thursday, September 28th, is ‘Test Your Smoke Alarm’ day and Saugeen Shore wants everyone to be “Saved by the Beep”.

Communities across Ontario are asking their residents to take a minute to ensure that they have working smoke alarms installed in their home – your best chance to keep you and your family safe in the event of a fire.

“Being prepared to act in the event of a fire starts with simply pressing the test button on your smoke alarm,” said Fire Chief Ed Melanson. “Test this alarm at least once a month, refresh the batteries at least once a year, and replace smoke alarms that are over 10 years old. It will save your life.”

Last year, Ontario lost 133 people to deadly fires – the highest number in over 20 years. The homes in many of these fires had no working smoke alarm.  It’s a reminder that only working smoke alarms will give you and your loved ones enough time to safely escape.

The province has legally required smoke alarms on every storey of a residence since 2006.  Residences also include vacation homes, cabins, trailers, RVs, and cottages.

Landlords must also test alarms annually, after the battery is replaced, and after every change in tenancy. Renters must notify their landlord as soon as they become aware that a smoke alarm is not operating.
