Arson charges laid after motel fire

On Sunday, February 27th at 12:52pm the Saugeen Shores Police Service and the Saugeen Shores Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Maplewood Motel in Port Elgin.

Firefighters from Saugeen Shores, Kincardine and Tiverton extinguished the fire. The motel received extensive damage and several occupants were displaced as a result. Victims Services Bruce Grey Perth and the Red Cross assisted those who required shelter.

A firefighter and an employee of the motel received minor injuries as a result of the fire.

A 39 year old man with no fixed address has been charged with:

  1. Arson – Disregard for Human Life
  2. Mischief Endangering Life
  3. Fail to comply with a probation order

He was held of for a bail hearing.
