August – the month for Monarch butterflies

August is the winding down of summer and, for some insects, it’s a time when having stocked up on food, the result is a new beginning.

For the Monarch butterfly caterpillar that has been feeding on the milkweed plant, it is a time to emerge as the beautiful winged species it is before it begins its long winter journey to Mexico.

In Saugeen Shores on Lake Huron, the butterfly gardens/pods have created a haven for the migratory Monarch with volunteers of all ages coming out to tag them to help keep track of the population.
