Autism Awareness events coming to Bruce and Grey

Despite a cold, rainy umbrella-day Sunday (April 30th), the rain-or-shine walk for Autism Awareness went ahead at Saugeen District Senior School.

Laura Webb, Program and Volunteer Coordinator with Autism Ontario Central East region, hosted the second event of 2023, arriving with hot pizzas for everyone.  “We hold social and recreational programs for all ages of those with autism, including their siblings and caregivers.”

Founded in 1973 as a registered charity by a group of parents, the Ontario Society for Autistic Children wanted to establish educational and support services for their children and who, until then, were often forced to institutionalize their children.

Autism Ontario is made up of seven regions across the province. Each region is managed by Autism Ontario staff with the support of an Oversight Committee and additional volunteer committees that support local community initiatives.

Central East (Durham, Simcoe, Peterborough, York)
East (Kingston, Upper Canada, Ottawa)
Central West (Halton, Peel, Waterloo, Wellington)
North (North East, Sault St. Marie, Sudbury, Thunder Bay)
South (Niagara, Brant, Hamilton)
Toronto
West (London, Windsor Essex, Grey Bruce, Huron Perth)

Autism Ontario staff and volunteers have extensive knowledge and experience in the field of autism and are great sources of information on a variety of autism related topics as well as local services and supports.
