On Saturday, March 23rd, visitors to the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre (BCM&CC) had the opportunity to meet the artists of the two fibre art exhibits that run until April 30th.
The Whisper Project, in the lower level OPG Gallery, is a fibre arts version of the childhood game of telephone, in which the message gets slightly changed when whispered to the next person. In this case, the artwork changes.
Participating members of the Fergus-Guelph Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) pod were divided into five groups with five members in each. The expectation was to complete a 12”x12” block of fibre art within a two-month timeframe. Each member was welcome to use their own style and techniques when creating a piece inspired by previous work.
A total of five photographs inspired 25 art quilts showing a range of approaches for the visitors’ enjoyment.
This show was previously on display at the Stratford-Perth library and will be on display in the Museum’s lower Ontario Power Generation feature gallery until April 30, 2024, along with The Thread of the Story: When Artefacts Inspire Art.
Every artefact has a story, or in the case of The Thread of the Story, three! Through the inspiration of the BCM&CC’s collection, this exhibition uncovers the stories of a selected number of artefacts, each with Museum staff’s personal connections to the objects, and the ultimate re-imagining of the artefact through fibre art.
“This exhibit is absolutely amazing,” said artist Bev White. “The Museum staff under the direction of Executive Director Cathy McGirr have done an incredible job putting this exhibit together. It has brought back personal memories for so many visitors.”
Discover the origin story of each artefact, why it attracted BCM&CC staff, and see the artists interpretation of the artefact as transformed through the medium of fibre in this exciting and unique show.
